Driver User Manual

How to use the TruckCrave ELD app to record hours of service, complete inspections, and respond to connection problems. Keep a copy of this manual in the vehicle.

Document: TC-ELD-UM Revision: 2.0 Applies to: Android and iOS

1Before you start

TruckCrave ELD has two parts: the vehicle unit, which plugs into the truck's diagnostic port, and the TruckCrave ELD app, which runs on the driver's phone or tablet. The vehicle unit reads engine data and sends it to the app over Bluetooth. The app displays your logs, records your duty status, and syncs records to your carrier.

What you need

  • A driver account created by your carrier (username and password)
  • An Android or iOS phone or tablet with Bluetooth and location services turned on
  • A mobile data connection for syncing and for sending logs to officials
  • A TruckCrave vehicle unit installed in the truck

Documents to keep in the vehicle

Federal rules (49 CFR 395.22(h)) require the following in the cab at all times. They can be paper or electronic.

Safety: Do not use the app while the vehicle is moving. Park in a safe location before you touch the phone or tablet. The app limits what can be done on screen while the truck is in motion.

Mounting: When the device is used as the ELD display, mount it in a fixed position where you can see it from your normal driving position.

2Sign in

Use the username and password your carrier gave you. Every driver must have their own account.

  1. Open the TruckCrave ELD app.
  2. Tap Username and enter your username.
  3. Tap Password and enter your password. Tap the eye icon to check what you typed.
  4. Tap Log in.
  5. If the app asks you to review unidentified driving or uncertified days, complete those prompts. See sections 6 and 8.

If you cannot sign in, check the spelling of your username and your internet connection. If it still fails, contact your carrier's safety department to confirm that your account is active.

Keep your password private. Never sign in under another driver's account and never let another driver use yours. Your logs are your legal record.

3The Home screen

The Home screen shows your current duty status, your hours-of-service clocks, and the main tools you use during the day.

ItemWhat it does

TrailersEnter or change trailer numbers. Do this before the DVIR so the trailer appears on the report.
Shipping DocumentsEnter a bill of lading, load, or manifest number.
Pair SBMarks qualifying sleeper berth periods as a split pair. Off by default. Use only as your carrier directs.

4Connect to the vehicle

The app must be connected to the vehicle unit to record driving time from the engine. Connect each time you start work in a truck.

  1. Park the truck and turn the ignition on.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth and location services are on for your phone or tablet.
  3. Open the app and tap the ELD icon at the top of the Home screen.
  4. Select your truck from the vehicle list. Check the unit number carefully.
  5. If your device shows a Bluetooth pairing request, accept it.
  6. Wait for the ELD icon to turn blue. The blue light on the vehicle unit will start blinking.

If the icon stays grey or orange, follow section 12.

Changing trucks: Tap the ELD icon and choose Leave Vehicle before you connect to a different truck.

5Duty status

Duty statuses

CodeStatusWhen to use it
OFFOff DutyYou are relieved of all work and responsibility for the vehicle.
SBSleeper BerthYou are resting in the sleeper berth.
DDrivingSet automatically when the vehicle is moving. You cannot select it manually or shorten it.
ONOn Duty, not drivingWorking but not driving: fueling, loading, inspections, paperwork, waiting at a shipper.
PCPersonal ConveyancePersonal use of the truck while off duty. Only if your carrier has enabled it. Select Off Duty first.
YMYard MoveMoving the truck within a yard or terminal. Only if your carrier has enabled it. Select On Duty first.

Automatic recording

  • Driving starts automatically when the vehicle reaches 5 mph (8 km/h).
  • When the vehicle stops, the screen shows Stationary. This describes the vehicle, not your duty status.
  • After the vehicle has been stopped for 5 minutes, the app asks whether you want to continue driving or change status.
  • If you do not answer within 1 minute, the app changes your status to On Duty, not driving.
  • The app records your location at every status change and once an hour while driving.

Change your duty status

  1. Park safely.
  2. Tap your current status on the Home screen.
  3. Choose the new status.
  4. Check the location. Enter it if the app asks.
  5. Add a note if needed, for example "Pre-trip inspection" or "Fuel".
  6. Tap Save and confirm that the new status is shown.

When the 5-minute prompt appears

  • Tap Update Status to choose your actual status.
  • Tap Continue Driving only if you are still driving, for example in stopped traffic.

Accuracy: Always select the status that matches what you are actually doing. Do not choose a status only to close a prompt.

6Certify your logs

At the end of each 24-hour period you must review your log and certify that it is true and correct. Certifying adds your electronic signature to the day.

At sign-in

  1. When you sign in, the app lists any days that are not certified.
  2. Open each day and check the graph and events.
  3. If the day is correct, tap Certify, sign, and confirm.

From the HOS tab

  1. Tap HOS and select the day.
  2. Review the graph, events, vehicle, trailer, and shipping document.
  3. Tap Certify and Submit.
  4. Sign inside the signature box.
  5. Tap Agree. Tap Not Ready if you need to make a correction first.

If you edit a day after certifying it, the app asks you to certify that day again.

Do not certify a log you know is wrong. Correct it first (see section 7) or contact your carrier.

7Edits and annotations

You may correct mistakes in your own log. Every edit needs a note explaining the reason. The original record is kept and can be seen by your carrier and by safety officials.

  • Driver edits: Open the day from the HOS tab, select the event, change it, and enter a reason.
  • Automatically recorded driving time cannot be shortened or removed. It can only be annotated, or reassigned to a co-driver who was actually driving.
  • Carrier edits: Your carrier can suggest a change. It appears in the app as a pending edit. Open it, review it, and tap Accept or Reject. Nothing changes in your log unless you accept.

8Unidentified driving

If the truck is driven while no driver is signed in, the ELD records the time under an Unidentified Driver profile. When you sign in, the app shows any unidentified driving recorded on that truck.

  1. Review each unidentified event: date, time, and location.
  2. If you were driving, tap Accept. The time is added to your log.
  3. If you were not driving, tap Reject.

Your carrier reviews any time that is not accepted. Always sign in before you move the truck to avoid unidentified driving.

9Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR)

The DVIR records your inspection of the truck and trailer, any defects you find, and your signature.

Before you begin

  • Connect to the vehicle so the unit number and odometer fill in automatically.
  • Enter or confirm trailer numbers on the Home screen.
  • Do the physical inspection. Do not mark an item as satisfactory unless you checked it.

Create a DVIR

  1. On the Home screen, tap No DVIR next to the daily graph. You can also open the daily graph, select DVIR, and tap Create.
  2. Check the vehicle and trailer details.
  3. Complete the General section: inspection type (pre-trip or post-trip), time, location, and odometer.
  4. If there are no defects, select No defects found.
  5. If there is a defect, tap Add Vehicle/Trailer Defects, choose the item, and describe the problem.
  6. Tap Next to go to the signature section.
  7. Sign in the signature box and tap OK.
  8. Tap Submit and wait for the confirmation.

Defects affecting safety: Report them and follow your carrier's procedure. Do not operate a vehicle that is not safe to drive.

10Team driving

Both drivers can be signed in on the same device. Only one driver can be the active driver at a time. Driving time is recorded for the active driver.

Add a co-driver

  1. With the truck parked, tap Add Co-Driver on the Home screen.
  2. The co-driver enters their own username and password.
  3. Confirm that the co-driver's name now appears in the app.

Switch the active driver

  1. Park the truck.
  2. Tap the driver name area and choose Switch Driver.
  3. Select the driver who will drive next and complete any prompts.
  4. Check the screen to make sure the correct driver is shown as active before moving the truck.

11Roadside inspection

When an authorized safety official asks for your records, open the Inspection tab. You have three options.

  • Begin Inspection shows your logs for the current day and the previous 14 days in a read-only view you can hand to the officer.
  • Send Output File sends the official ELD record by web services or email, as the officer directs.
  • Send Logs emails a copy of your logs to an address you enter, such as your own or your carrier's.

Full instructions are in the Data Transfer Instructions.

12Connection problems

Park safely, then try these steps in order. Stop as soon as the ELD icon turns blue.

Step 1: Select the vehicle again

  1. Tap the ELD icon. If a vehicle is selected, tap Leave Vehicle.
  2. Select the correct vehicle again and accept the pairing request if it appears.

Step 2: Restart Bluetooth

  1. Tap the ELD icon and tap Leave Vehicle.
  2. Open your device's Bluetooth settings. Turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it on.
  3. Return to the app and select the vehicle again.

Step 3: Restart the vehicle unit and your device

  1. With the engine off and the truck parked, unplug the vehicle unit, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
  2. Restart your phone or tablet.
  3. Wait until the lights on the vehicle unit are on, then connect again as described in section 4.

Still not connected?

Contact TruckCrave support and tell your carrier. If the problem continues, it may be an ELD malfunction. Follow section 13.

Never unplug the vehicle unit while driving.

13Malfunctions and diagnostics

The ELD checks itself continuously. When it detects a problem, the app shows an indicator at the top of the screen:

  • D (diagnostic event): a data problem the ELD is tracking, such as missing data or unidentified driving. Logging continues.
  • M (malfunction): the ELD can no longer record or transfer data reliably. You may need to switch to paper logs.

Indicators cannot be cleared by the driver. They clear automatically when the condition is resolved.

The full list of codes and the required steps are on the Malfunction Instruction Sheet. In short, when a malfunction occurs you must:

  1. Note the malfunction and notify your carrier in writing within 24 hours.
  2. Reconstruct your logs for the current 24-hour period and the previous 7 consecutive days on paper, unless you can retrieve them from the ELD.
  3. Keep paper logs until the ELD is repaired or replaced.

14Pre-trip checklist

  • I signed in with my own account.
  • I reviewed and answered any unidentified driving and uncertified days.
  • The app is connected to the correct truck and the ELD icon is blue.
  • The correct driver is shown as active.
  • Trailer and shipping document numbers are entered.
  • My duty status and cycle are correct.
  • I completed the DVIR and recorded any defects.
  • The user manual, data transfer and malfunction instructions, and 8 days of blank paper logs are in the truck.
