1What the driver must do
When the app shows an M (malfunction) indicator, or the ELD stops recording, the driver must:
- Note the malfunction and give the motor carrier written notice within 24 hours. Include the malfunction code, date, time, vehicle, and what you saw.
- Reconstruct the record of duty status for the current 24-hour period and the previous 7 consecutive days on graph-grid paper logs, unless those records can be retrieved from the ELD or are already in your possession.
- Continue to prepare paper logs by hand, in accordance with 49 CFR 395.8, until the ELD is serviced and back in compliance.
- During an inspection, tell the official the ELD has malfunctioned and provide the paper logs for the current day and the previous 7 days.
- Contact TruckCrave support for help identifying and fixing the problem.
Keep blank paper logs in the vehicle. Drivers must carry a supply of blank graph-grid log sheets for at least 8 days (49 CFR 395.22(h)(4)).
2What the motor carrier must do
- Correct, repair, replace, or service the malfunctioning ELD within 8 days of discovering the condition or receiving the driver's notice, whichever comes first.
- Require drivers to keep paper logs until the ELD is back in service.
- If the carrier needs more time, request an extension from the FMCSA Division Administrator for the state of the carrier's principal place of business within 5 days of the driver's notice, as described in 49 CFR 395.34(d).
- Contact TruckCrave support. When a vehicle unit must be replaced, TruckCrave ships a replacement after the carrier reports the fault.
3How problems are shown
Data diagnostic event
The ELD found a data inconsistency it is tracking. Logging continues. Follow the corrective step in the table below.
Malfunction
The ELD cannot meet a compliance requirement. Follow the driver steps in section 1 and switch to paper logs if needed.
Drivers cannot clear indicators. The ELD clears them automatically once the condition that caused them has been resolved.
4Malfunction codes
| Code | Malfunction | What it means |
|---|---|---|
P | Power compliance | Driving time was not recorded because the ELD did not have power or was not ready. Total of 30 minutes or more of unrecorded driving in a 24-hour period, across all drivers including unidentified. |
E | Engine synchronization compliance | The ELD lost its connection to the engine's data for a total of more than 30 minutes in a 24-hour period, across all drivers. |
T | Timing compliance | The ELD's clock is more than 10 minutes off from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). |
L | Positioning compliance | The ELD could not get a valid location for a total of 60 minutes or more in a 24-hour period while the vehicle was moving. |
R | Data recording compliance | The ELD can no longer record or retain required events, or retrieve records that are not kept elsewhere. |
S | Data transfer compliance | The ELD's data transfer check has kept failing for 3 days after a data transfer diagnostic event. |
O | Other ELD malfunction | Any other failure detected by the ELD. |
5Data diagnostic codes
| Code | Diagnostic event | What to do |
|---|---|---|
1 | Power data diagnostic | The ELD was not powered within one minute of the engine starting. Check that the vehicle unit is firmly connected to the diagnostic port. |
2 | Engine synchronization data diagnostic | Engine data was not available when needed. Check the connection at the diagnostic port and reconnect the app. |
3 | Missing required data elements | An event is missing required information, often location. Check that location services are on, and enter the location when the app asks. |
4 | Data transfer data diagnostic | The automatic data transfer check failed. Check the device's mobile data connection. The ELD checks again at least every 24 hours. |
5 | Unidentified driving records | More than 30 minutes of unidentified driving in a 24-hour period. Review and accept or reject the records at sign-in. The carrier reviews any remaining time. |
6 | Other ELD identified diagnostic | Contact TruckCrave support. |
6Vehicle unit lights
The lights on the vehicle unit help identify connection problems.
| Light | Blinking | Solid | Off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amber: cellular | Connected to the cellular network | – | No cellular connection |
| Green: GPS | GPS position locked | Searching for satellites | – |
| Blue: Bluetooth | Connected to the driver's device | – | No Bluetooth connection |
