Data Transfer Instructions

Instructions for producing and transferring hours-of-service records to an authorized safety official during a roadside inspection, review, or audit. Keep a copy of this sheet in the vehicle.

Document: TC-ELD-DT Revision: 2.0 ELD type: Telematics Reference: 49 CFR Part 395, Subpart B, Appendix A, 4.9 and 4.10

1Supported methods

TruckCrave ELD is a telematics ELD. It supports both telematics transfer methods required by the federal rules, plus display on the driver's device.

MethodHow it worksButton
DisplayThe driver hands the device to the official, who reviews the logs on screen.Begin Inspection
Wireless web servicesThe ELD output file is sent to FMCSA's server. The official retrieves it using the routing code or comment they provide.Send Output File
EmailThe ELD output file is attached to an email sent to FMCSA, which routes it to the official.Send Output File

All three are on the Inspection tab of the app. The device needs a mobile data connection for web services and email transfer.

Safety: Stop the vehicle in a safe location before using the app.

2Display logs on the device

  1. Open the TruckCrave ELD app and tap the Inspection tab.
  2. Tap Begin Inspection.
  3. Hand the device to the official. The screen shows the current day and the previous 14 days, including the graph grid, duty-status events, total hours, vehicle and carrier details, and any malfunction or diagnostic indicators.
  4. The official can move between days using the date arrows. The inspection view is read-only.
  5. When the official is finished, tap the back arrow to exit the inspection view.

The display covers more than the U.S. requirement of the current 24-hour period and the previous 7 consecutive days.

3Transfer by wireless web services

  1. Open the Inspection tab.
  2. Ask the official for the output file comment (routing code). Type it exactly as given into the comment field.
  3. Tap Send Output File.
  4. Select Web Services.
  5. Tap Send.
  6. Wait for the confirmation message. Tell the official that the file has been sent.

4Transfer by email

  1. Open the Inspection tab.
  2. Enter the output file comment the official gives you.
  3. Tap Send Output File.
  4. Select Email.
  5. Tap Send. The app sends the file to FMCSA's designated address. You do not need to enter an email address.
  6. Wait for the confirmation message and tell the official.

Output file: The file is the standard ELD output file defined in Appendix A, section 4.8.2. It covers the inspection period and includes the driver's records, vehicle and carrier information, edits and annotations, and malfunction and diagnostic events.

5Send a copy of your logs

Use this when an official, your carrier, or you need a readable copy of the logs by email. This is not a replacement for the official output file.

  1. Open the Inspection tab and tap Send Logs.
  2. Type the recipient's email address carefully.
  3. Check the address and tap Send.
  4. Wait for the confirmation message.

Only send records to people who are authorized to receive them.

6If a transfer fails

  1. Check that the device has a mobile data connection and try again.
  2. If it fails again, try the other method (email instead of web services, or the reverse).
  3. Tell the official that the transfer did not complete and offer the on-screen display.
  4. Contact TruckCrave support at +1 661-735-1750 and tell your carrier.

If the ELD cannot transfer data at all, this may be a data transfer malfunction. See the Malfunction Instruction Sheet.

7Operating in Canada

When a Canadian enforcement officer requests records, use Begin Inspection to display the current day and previous 14 days. To send the output file, tap Send Output File and follow the officer's instructions for the transfer method and email address.
